How will you make an impact?

The Director and Site Leader of the California microbial site is a key leadership role within the Microbial Manufacturing business unit with responsibility for overseeing our newest plant. The Site Leader will build the site leadership team, drive operational readiness, plant start-up and oversee operations of the facility once construction is complete.

The qualified individual will have responsibility for the site P+L and partner closely with Commercial Operations and Finance to ensure commercial/financial targets are set and achieved. The position is of high visibility, both in the company and in the industry, and the Site Leader will be responsible for delivering on the promise of transformative medicines made microbially. The main priority will be rapidly building the team that will realize the site's potential.

The Site Leader will play an integral role in significantly expanding the Pharma Services Group's (PSG) business while fulfilling the global demand for microbially produced products on behalf of our vast customer base. This role will also play a key role in growing and organizing our global footprint within the rapidly expanding Contract Developing and Manufacturing (CDMO) services industry. This individual will strategically deploy internal capabilities to deliver impressive results using a combination of exceptional awareness of external market forces and a deep understanding of our customer's needs. In addition, s/he will work across the MMS network to provide support and leadership necessary to identifying process improvement opportunities and delivering solutions to such challenges.

What will you do?

  • Oversees operational readiness, organization standards and partner with Commercial Operations to establish customer contract requirements, and related specifications.

  • Leads the organizational ramp-up, transition and integration of staffing work force plan, training and development, process validation, cGMP documentation and production planning.

  • Ensures the site has the necessary capabilities to support business management forecast and planning.

  • As a change leader, provides transformational leadership to support successful company and culture assimilation to Company's Mission and 4i Values which raises the bar for the Site, Business Unit, and PSG.

  • Identifies opportunities and drive actions that would allow performance to exceed the agreed plan, accelerate growth, improve margins, and drive down working capital needs.

  • Works effectively with operational, business and site leaders to develop and effectively deploy a shared vision & approach.

  • Leverages complementary strengths and develops high performing teams; ensuring scalable talent in key positions; ensures key capabilities are developed or acquired. Recruit and retain best in class talent.

  • Develops drives, and nurtures acquisition of new business by actively expanding services to current clients, and introduction of new clients into the network.

  • Provides, and executes upon, strategies to deliver upon both long-term and short-term goals for the Business Unit, which also aligns with the strategic business plans of PSG and Thermo Fisher Scientific.

  • Is a problem-identifier and solver; recognizes a wide range of early warning signals in the Business, which allows and/or requires a proactive approach to problem prevention.

  • Influences the strategic and tactical direction of the business by providing insightful and timely business analytics.

  • Ensures full alignment with both customers and regulatory authorities to deliver flawless compliance.

How will you get here?


  • Bachelor's degree, with an advanced degree in business administration preferred.


  • 8-10 years of progressive experience in microbial or mammalian biologics manufacturing or other highly regulated environment

  • 3-5 years of supervisory/people leadership experience

  • Operational and business/plant start up experience strongly preferred

  • Brings a blend of strategic and operational expertise and a track record of leadership experience in diverse, fast changing environments and delivering strong operational results.

  • Knowledge of the levers that drive revenue and margin at the business unit level. Must have successful P&L experience.

  • Extensive experience managing a dynamic and complexed manufacturing business in a highly regulated environment.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Must have a strong understand microbially based processes at scale, cell and gene therapy manufacturing processes, cGMP compliance, and biologics manufacturing.

  • Must have the ability and desire to be an impactful leader of the business unit, who proactively identifies problems and provides solutions.

  • Demonstrated leadership skills and track record of success, in hiring talent, building strong teams, obtaining results, organizational scaling, and successfully achieving business financial results.
