Position Description
The Pharma Analytics business unit focuses on developing products for QC release of biopharmaceuticals across the bioproduction workflow through applying different analytical technologies. The Director, R&D will drive the innovation strategy and roadmap development, lead and develop the R&D teams involved in early research, NPI projects, and application development. Actively identifies and drives development of internal and external technology platforms which add to the BU’s capabilities.
Education:
- PhD or equivalent experience in a relevant scientific subject area (e.g., Analytical Chemistry, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, or related field)
Experience:
15+ years of industry experience in biopharmaceutical R&D, especially in analytical technologies for bioproduction or quality control
10+ years in R&D leadership, including experience managing multi-disciplinary, multi-layered scientific teams, developing analytical products
Proven experience with New Product Introduction (NPI) processes and technology platform development
Experience in portfolio management (including scope, cost, schedule, and risk)
Demonstrated ability to collaborate cross-functionally (Product, Project Management and Operations)
Previous involvement with external partnerships (commercial or academic)
Track record of scientific communication (e.g., conferences, publications, talks)
Responsibilities
Direct management responsibility for all research and product development activities for the Pharma-analytics BU
Develops the longer-term Innovation Roadmap
Manages and prioritizes the R&D portfolio, including schedules, scope, cost, and risk associated with the full portfolio
Works collaboratively with internal BU functions, such as Product Management, PMO, and Operations to craft and implement R&D strategies and planning
Represents PA to other sites and divisions for cross-site collaborations and projects
Identifies and represents PA externally to commercial or academic partners
Works with and actively scouts for external partners, customers, and scientific experts to explore areas of new content and new technologies
Supports other departments such as manufacturing, technical support, and quality by providing scientific mentorship and assignment of resources to assist in troubleshooting
Attends scientific/management conferences and represents business unit through talks, tutorials, and publications
Leads a multi-layered organization of internal resources, external resources, and partnerships
Skills and Proficiencies:
Strong critical thinking and innovative leadership
Ability to manage and develop scientific talent
Excellent communication and presentation skills
Familiarity with regulatory and quality requirements in biopharma production and analytics
Strong organizational and decision-making skills

Compensation and Benefits
The salary range estimated for this position based in California is $192,100.00–$275,000.00.
