Job Description

An exciting new collaboration is a novel development project together with the Weizmann Institute of Science (WIS), one of the world's leading multidisciplinary basic research institutions in the natural and exact sciences in Israel. The collaboration started in March 2024 with the research group of Dr. Schwartz at WIS. His group is situated in the Free Electron Lab in the department of Physics of Complex systems and the general research theme is the interaction of free-space electron waves with light. The objective of this collaboration is to advance the development and commercialization of laser-based devices for TEM.

A first generation LPP has been developed at UC-Berkeley in the USA, in collaboration with Thermo Fisher. At WIS, an improved and miniaturized version of the LPP will be explored that is expected to enable easier integration in the TEM. WIS will put this work in the wider context of electron-photon interaction research and more fundamental applications of lasers in electron microscopy.

Responsibilities:

  • Independent operation and troubleshooting of first generation LPP in Eindhoven

  • Learn theoretical and practical aspects of TEM operation

  • Conduct research work at WIS by participating in concept development and practical implementation and validation of multiple prototypes

  • Facilitate knowledge transfer from an academic setting to industry, and set up- and troubleshoot early prototypes at Thermo Fisher

  • Participate in integration of the prototype into a TEM

  • Develop protocols for practical operation of the LPP-equipped TEM

Requirements:

  • A PhD in Applied Physics, or similar, preferable in the field of laser physics

  • Affinity with instrumentation and method development

  • Hands-on experience with independently setting up experiments with lasers and optical systems, preferably using optical cavities and frequency locking techniques

  • A curiosity in electron microscopy and a high motivation to improve TEM instrumentation

  • Motivated to work in both an industry and academia setting, bridging the gap between academic proof-of-principle work and industrial prototype development

  • An effective teammate with good communicational skills (both written and verbal) and highly proficient in spoken and written English

  • Willing to work part time in a 50-50% scheme in the Netherlands (Eindhoven) and Israel (Rehovot)

This is a full-time position located in Eindhoven, The Netherlands, for a duration of two years. The chosen candidate will be part of a diverse and collaborative team, contributing to advanced research and development in the field of electron microscopy.
