Thermo Fisher Scientific Production Manager in Detroit, Michigan
The Production Manager is responsible for the leadership and direction of daily workflow for the manufacture of dehydrated culture media products in the Detroit plant. The Manager will oversee and provide leadership to the manufacturing operations in the Peptone Manufacturing and Fine Chemical functions in an effort to meet plant and corporate goals pertaining to safety, quality, delivery, cost and associate engagement. The successful candidate must have an understanding of equipment, processes, and procedures related to product manufacture. The position may require rotating shift coverage when the shift supervisors are unavailable.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Production Leadership and Management
Manage the production activities on all shifts.
Promote employee safety through education, communication, and continuous improvement.
Foster effective and consistent communication to all production shifts.
Ensure all necessary materials are available for production usage.
Coordinate in-process, qualification, and final assay testing.
Coordinate planning / production activity control.
Maintain departmental records, such as equipment cleaning documentation and equipment maintenance records.
Assure that all employees follow established occupational safety rules, housekeeping, Hazmat regulations, and SOPs.
Drive the accurate and effective use of the SAP system including production transactions, inventory controls and financial transactions.
Make routine rounds of the entire facility to ensure production standards are maintained.
Administer company and union contract policies and procedures. Conduct performance corrective actions.
Create and manage schedules for Production.
Interface with quality assurance department to assure compliance of manufactured product.
Develop, implement, and maintain manufacturing operating procedures.
Develop S.M.A.R.T. annual performance and development objectives.
Measure and appraise direct report’s job performance against duties, objectives, and projects.
Lead personnel training efforts and develop direct reports through coaching efforts.
Manage the Kaizen Action Sheet (KAS) program with responsibilities for tracking and allocating resources to close KAS in order to meet the departmental goals.
Lead continuous improvement teams and activities, including 5S blitzes, shift-startup, updating PVD boards.
Support and/or drive employee safety initiatives, quality improvements, production improvements, cost reductions and associate engagement improvements. Define programs for supervision and teams which determine their responsibilities within these areas.
Implementing and tracking cost savings initiated to meet financial targets associated with continuous improvement initiatives.
Must work with employees at all plant levels and with cross-functional areas in and out of site to drive CI along entire Value Stream.

Bachelor's degree with a major in a natural/biological science, technical, engineering or business.
Must have previous experience leading in union environments.
Five years of demonstrated leadership in a GMP/ISO production environment in the Pharmaceutical or Food industry. A minimum of 10 years of experience may be considered in the absence of Bachelor’s degree.
