How You Will Make an Impact

This position reports directly to the Site Leader/Director of Operations – the primary responsibility of this position is to lead the Kalamazoo site’s overall Environmental Health and Safety Program. This position will work closely with others on the site leadership team to identify, and reach goals, and continuously improve Environmental Health and Safety performance.

What you Will Do

  • Plan, implement, and coordinate EHS Management System for on-site and field-based employees, and contingent workers, to reduce or eliminate occupational illness and injuries, improve employee engagement, and reduce business risks and losses.

  • Review accident reports and ensure investigations develop solutions that minimize or prevent recurrence. Utilize the Safety Rapid Response and the SHED database to facilitate this process.

  • Assist in the administration of OSHA, NFPA, EPA, FAA, DEA and other relevant safety and environmental standards.

  • Introduce and interpret various Federal, State, and Local recognized rules, regulations and procedures governing hazardous materials as they impact the company.

  • Spearhead all environmental compliance programs related to air, water, waste and chemical handling.

  • Coordinate the maintenance of Safety Data Sheet (SDS) sheet on company products.

  • Manage the company hazard communication program including maintaining the SDS sheets for chemicals used in the facility.

  • Acts as process champion of the Safety Team, First Responders, and Hazwoper Team.

  • Provide ongoing training and supervision for all facility emergency response teams.

  • Develop and administer medical surveillance and biological monitoring in accordance with OSHA standards and corporate policy.

  • Oversee the EHS Training requirements for the facility. Ensure that the site’s EHS training matrix is up to date and that all training is being conducted as required. Prepare and deliver safety training sessions to employees and key safety team members (including new hire EHS orientation). Coordinate and maintain Hazard Waste Program and ensure effective disposal and cleanup practices are in place.

  • Conduct job site and ergonomic evaluations; recommend changes to management and implement approved recommendations.

  • Collaborate with other functions on the review and selection of new chemical products as well as evaluate changes to manufacturing processes, as requested.

  • Oversee the effectiveness and placement of plant-wide fire protection equipment and emergency warning systems, in partnership with Engineering/Facilities Manager.

  • Review Worker's Compensation costs, days lost days of light/modified duty, number of litigated cases, medical and indemnity costs per case, experience and history statistics. Reports to management any trends and recommendations.

  • Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with community health and welfare agencies, local hospitals and physicians.

  • Participate in professional educational programs to maintain skill levels and certifications.

  • Coordinate EHS related response to customer audits and questionnaires.

  • Coordinate the site’s industrial hygiene program.

  • Partner with other Thermo Fisher sites to collect and analyze safety data and help to formulate recommendations for improvement.

  • Lead, support, and participate in Practical Process Improvement (PPI) projects.

How You Will Get Here

  • Bachelor's degree in safety, environmental or related field

  • 5-10 years related experience preferred

  • Exposure to prop 65 (product labeling) strong knowledge of WMS (Canadian version of OSHA)

  • CHMM and 40-hour HAZWOPER training

  • Train the Trainer Certification (preferred)

  • Experience with OSHA, NFPA, FAA, DEA, EPA regulatory requirements strongly preferred

  • Computer experience including Word, Excel, and Power Point

  • Self-starter, attention to detail, team player
